an interesting post, i found your blog when i was searching for the exact wording of that mlk comment.

its funny that you talk about legislating morals, because ive had similar thoughts.

i think however, every law we pass in a way, is legislating morals. everything that is illegal, we consider immoral- murder, rape, theft, etc

things that are promoting by law are on the other hand generally considered moral

we do need to change hearts and minds (to steal a phrase from the iraq discussion) for meaningful social change to happen, but we also need legislation to encourage that forward progression.

if we were waiting for complete benevolence of the populace on their own we would have never gotten some of the social advances we have such as women’s suffrage and the civil rights movement victories

What is the context of guard here? I always find the concept of guarding the truth interesting, because it’s such a loaded phrase. On the one hand if we do not viciously defend the central truths of the gospel we run the risk of not worshiping God as he has revealed himself to us, but at the same time the Truth has always been, is today and will always be true in a way that is far beyond the ability of man to meddle with (see Revelation 19). Jesus is alive, he does not need to be guarded as though we might kill him again. He needs to be guarded as if he were to return like a thief in the night and all those who are not prepared are destined for destruction, and that looks less like guarding and more like proclaiming.

This Scripture leaped out at me because here God calls by name a man for a specific purpose, and it is not to lead thousands out of exile or to lead a great army, but to create art for the Name of the LORD. Bezalel is called by name and filled with the Spirit of God, with artistic skill! Isn’t art a reflection of God’s creative work? The arts truly are a calling from God and a form of worship. Let us never belittle or minimize the calling in one’s life to be an artist.
